Whisper is called away by Frenzy as the locals wander off, and the gang finds an unoccupied cave to bed down in. Ulla expresses her concern about Whisper. Reggie focuses on a Lucid Dream and tries to locate the child. As his little body trembles with effort, he sees Whisper being herded into another room with a bunch of other children, all between the ages of 5-12. They are being equipped with flashlight helmets and tools for digging. They are a labor force. Suddenly Whisper turns around and looks straight back at him, eyes wide in shocked surprise — and then the connection is cut.

Reggie tells everyone what he saw. The weird thing was being seen: Reggie has projected himself many times before, but no one has ever noticed him before — with the notable exception of The Frank. The group discusses the idea of intervening, and decides to keep an eye on the situation. Ulla is getting upset with Nash’s moral relativism.

In the distance they hear the child labor force being marched down toward the work site. Trae follows the group with his drone. He sees that the children are clearing debris, and the smallest are being sent to scout out narrow fissures and cracks in the rock face.

Reggie takes first watch while Trae programs the Omega bot to do recon and mapping. The bot is a Global Nations product, intended to patrol warehouses and exterminate “small living objects.” A toggle in the code enables Trae to scale that feature up to human size any time he wants.

Meanwhile Reggie reaches out mentally to Whisper. She hears him and asks who’s there. Just as he’s beginning to speak, another child screams somewhere nearby and the connection is broken. Reggie tries to contact her again, but can’t.

There’s a lot of shouting outside. Frenzy runs into the room, yelling “Everybody up! Emergency! You’re going to work NOW!” He slaps the sleeping form of Nash for emphasis. Bad idea. Nash lashes out so quickly, he isn’t even fully awake before Frenzy hits the floor, knocked out cold.
