Cthulhu is a plush toy, a bobble-head, slippers and action figures. How can today’s writers escape this ‘normalization’ of a creature whose very existence is supposed to be mind-shattering? Is it even possible to write a new Mythos story that would have the same impact today that “The Call of Cthulhu” had back in 1926, without reverting to simple pastiche?
